On September 3, 1934, Walter Kloniak, a CCC “Boy” — really a young man — died fighting a forest fire near Clarkia ID. He was struck by a falling tree and perished.
His death brings to five the number of men killed fighting fires in 1934 in Region No. 1 of the Forest Service.
Earlier in August, three other CCC firefighters died in Idaho and one died in California after being hit by a tree.
