North Carolina Division of Forest Resources chief pilot Marshall Newman died after a midair collision near Kinston on November 19, 1973. Mechanic Larry Moody was also in the single-engine Beechcraft T-34B to make a visual inspection of another T-34B. While returning from a forest fire in Columbus County, the second plane reportedly had trouble with its nose wheel. When the two aircraft collided, the collision severed Newman’s plane’s vertical stabilizer and rudder. They crashed in a wooded area north of the runway at Stallings Field. Both Newman and Moody were killed. The second aircraft manually deployed its nose gear and landed without a problem.
