On 7/17/99 firefighter Martin Stiles, age 40, from Crew 19-3 (inmate crew) succumbed due to traumatic injuries suffered in a fall that occurred on the “Holser Fire”. This was a 2,502 acre fire located near Piru in Ventura County.

  • USFA Memorial Database: Martin Michael Stiles

    Firefighter Stiles was a part of a Los Angeles County Fire Department Strike Team working a wildland fire incident in Ventura County. His crew was assigned to construct handline around a slop over that extended over a dozer line on a ridge. Firefighter Stiles slipped over a ridge and fell to his death 150 feet below. The time of the fatal incident was approximately 1:50 a.m.
