HAMMETT, Idaho – A 33-year-old firefighter with the Bureau of Land Management has died after he and his crew finished physical training at a southern Idaho fire center. Terry Sonner, of Wendell, collapsed after the training at the Hammett Guard Station Wednesday morning, the BLM said in a news release. His crew members immediately began medical treatment and called emergency services, but they were not able to revive him.
The BLM says they have appointed a team to investigate the cause of Sonner’s death, in the hopes of preventing similar incidents in the future. The 14-year wildland fire veteran was the fire operations supervisor of the BLM’s Hammett Guard Station engine crew.
“We have lost an amazing wildland firefighter. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the wildland firefighting community,” said Andy Delmas, a fire management officer for the BLM. Sonner is survived by a wife and five children.
