Summary: On Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at approximately 3:45 PM, near the conclusion of a CAL FIRE crew training hike, a 54 year old Firefighter Trainee Lio Lionell collapsed from a heart attack. CPR was administered and paramedics administered Advanced Life Support in the ambulance. The injured Lionell was transported to a local hospital emergency room where he was later pronounced dead. The autopsy report listed “acute myocardial infarction due to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease” as the cause of death.

- Provide preplacement and annual medical evaluations to all fire fighters consistent with NFPA 1582, Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments, and NFPA 1051, Standard for Wildland Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.
- Make basic life support equipment, including an AED, readily available during strenuous training exercises.
- Provide fire fighters with medical clearance to wear a respirator as part of the Fire Department’s medical evaluation program.
- Provide annual respirator fit testing for fire fighters who wear respirators.

An inmate firefighter assigned to Cuesta Fire Camp, located at the California Men’s Colony, died while taking part in a County/Cal Fire training program at Camp San Luis Obispo.
Cal Fire Capt. Jane Schmitz said the firefighter collapsed while hiking on the military base shortly after 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. According to Schmitz, the firefighter was transported to a local hospital, were he was pronounced dead at 4:42 p.m. The California Department of Corrections is reviewing the incident.

UPDATE 5:10 p.m. Thursday: A firefighter who died while taking part in a County/Cal Fire training program at Camp San Luis Obispo on Wednesday has been identified as Crisanto Leo Lionell. Lionell, 54, is presumed to have died of natural causes, according to a news release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. An autopsy is scheduled for next Wednesday, said San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s spokesman Rob Bryn. (more at link…)
