Summary: Dwight Hilton, 57, of the East Central Volunteer Fire Department was fighting a 10-acre woods and grass fire that was threatening homes on 2/1/2014 when he suffered a heart attack. Attempts to save him were of no avail and he was pronounced dead at Southwest Regional Medical Center in McComb.

Mississippi lost its first firefighter this year in a line-of-duty death on Saturday, after what officials believe could have been an arson. Dwight Hilton, 57, of the East Fork community went into cardiac arrest after fighting a grass fire and was pronounced dead at a McComb hospital, according to the Enterprise-Journal. Officials said the fire appears to have started in three places, which has led to an arson investigation. Amite County Sheriff Tim Wroten said that if arson can be proven, the culprit could face murder charges… More at the link…
- Obituary: Mr. Dwight Reid Hilton was born on July 10, 1956 to Densel Hilton and Ivene Hackler Hilton.He was a shuttle driver for Mt. Zion Adult Day Care in Summit. He also worked for over 25 years as a delivery driver for Carlstedts Wholesale Florist in McComb. He was an avid deer hunter and outdoorsman. He was a dedicated fireman for the East Central VFD ans was also a devoted member of Tangipahoa Baptist Church. He was a very loving husband, father and friend.
Mr. Hilton was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife of 30 years Teresa H. Hilton of East Fork; his mother Ivene Hilton of Jackson, MS; one daughter Heather O’Quin and her husband John of East Fork; one sister Kathy Eakin and her husband Robert of Jackson, MS; and a host of other relatives and special friends.
The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the East Central Volunteer Fire Dept. c/o Cam Sharp 4342 E. Newman Rd. Liberty, MS 39645.
- Services: Visitation will be Tuesday evening 2/4/2014 at Tangipahoa Baptist Church in Smithdale from 5 until 8 PM and continue Wednesday from 9 AM until services there at 11. Burial will follow in the East Fork Cemetery. Revs. Mike Morris and Ben Thompson will officiate.
