Summary: On September 22, 1951, the Russell Creek Fire overtook Jerry Bain, a logger/firefighter asked to help fight the fire. He jumped from his truck to flee, and he died. Logging companies were commonly in agreement with the State and the Feds to add their employees’ efforts to firefighting across the West. Landholdings in many areas of the West were a checkerboard of private and public lands.
