Summary:
Paul Wood, Red Willow County Attorney, says John Trumble, 66, of Arapahoe, died Friday evening around 7 p.m. as a result of the wildfire in Red Willow County.
Trumble was retired as the Cambridge Fire Chief but was helping crews by acting as a spotter.
Officials say Trumble’s vehicle was northbound on Road 407, approximately seven miles southeast of Bartley, Nebraska when it left the roadway due to poor visibility from smoke and dust. Officials say that is where Trumble was overcome by smoke and fire.
The Nebraska State Fire Marshall and Red Willow County Sheriff were on the scene when Trumbley’s body was found by firefighters around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Officials say the family has been notified and funeral arrangements are pending.
No additional information is being released at this time, the incident remains under investigation.
