Summary: During initial attack on the Silver Creek Fire, Julie Young was struck by a snag that fell from within the fire. She and her crew were working on a line more than 90 feet away. She died from trauma. Julie was a seasonal firefighter with the US Forest Service; her crew’s home forest was also the Boise National Forest in Idaho.

- Mike Theole, Eugene Register Guard, Sep 2, 1994 has good info about another snag death — Shanon Campbell — as well as hazards, and protections for firefighters doing a dangerous job. Julie’s death earlier in the season is mentioned by Stan Palmer, Safety Statistics Keeper in Boise, on the top middle of page 4a.
“Trees are always the biggest hazard,” says Stan Palmer, who keepers the safety statistics in Boise. “It takes several months for all the statistics to come in, but so far I know two firefighters killed this year by trees. The other one was an 20 year old girl here in Idaho a few weeks ago.”
