Summary: On May 24, 1988, Raymond Hausler and a crew of 8 other “lighters” were burning the Blue Hole #6 Unit in the Roseburg District BLM as a prescribed burn. They were spread out from the top to the bottom of the unit and burning East to West. They were moving into a draw when the fire began heating up and the wind caused the fire to jump ahead of the crew onto the opposite side of the draw. The crew began evacuating and when they regrouped, Hausler was missing. He was later found dead. This was only his second day doing this kind of work.
