Summary: Firefighter Bordenkircher was the driver of an Wickliffe KY VFD engine apparatus responding to a wildland fire. The right wheels of the engine left the roadway. She steered left to bring it back on the road and the then lost control of the vehicle. The engine crashed into a tree, and Barbara Bordenkircher was ejected. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Another firefighter who was a passenger in the engine was severely injured. The law enforcement report on the crash cited a shift in the water load as the cause of the incident.

- International Association of Women in Fire and Emergency Services — In Memoriam: Barbara BordenkircherBordenkircher had been with the department for more than a year. She also volunteered for the Barlow Fire Department and the Ballard County Rescue Squad. She is survived by her husband, who is also a volunteer firefighter.
