On October 12, 1938, Joseph Dardis, 69 of International Falls MN, died of a heart attack while aiding in the rescue work necessitated by forest fires in Northern Minnesota. (from the Montreal Gazette, Oct 12, 1938 and MN Death Record)

from another Montreal Gazette, 10/12/1938 article:
Fred Servis suffocated and died on 10/10/1938 near International Falls while engaged in firefighting. Death records show he was 55 years old.
