Summary: Oregon Firefighter Steve Johnson, 33, died on 12/1/80 at San Antonio Community Hospital of an apparent heart attack suffered while fighting the 6,000-acre Lakeland brushfire in the Cleveland NF, 8 mi east of Camp Pendleton, CA. He was a member of a 20-man handcrew sent Nov 26 from the Mapleton RD of the Siuslaw NF in Oregon. At day’s end on November 30th, Steve complained to crewmates of headache and sickness and was taken to the Mission Valley Hospital. The physician there recommended he be transported home to Oregon for treatment. He was transported to the Ontario CA airport where he collapsed. He was rushed to the San Antonio Community Hospital, did not respond to treatment and died at 1:33 AM.
