Summary: On April 19, 1979 James and his crew were fighting an arson fire on Vowell Mountain in Anderson County, Tennessee. James was a Ranger Aide in Anderson County. While working on the fire with his crew and after raking about 75 feet of fireline, Jim became nauseated and threw up. He felt he had bad acid indigestion and told the crew he was going to go back to the truck for and antacid. The crew continued the fire line, and when returning to the trucks, found Jim who said he was sick and complaining of pain from indigestion. While walking back to the truck Jim passed away from a heart attack.
